About the Book

First published in 1985 by Airlife and reissued in 2026 by The Crowood Press, Architect of Wings by Harald Penrose is the definitive biography of Roy Chadwick.

Penrose, writing from within the world of British aviation and a younger contemporary of Chadwick, brings both technical understanding and familiarity with many of the same people and developments of the period. His account captures not only the progression of aircraft design but also the atmosphere in which that work took place.

The book is enriched by photographs and material drawn from Chadwick's own collection, offering a more personal view alongside the professional record. It also reflects the close involvement of his daughter, Margaret Dove, who assisted Penrose with recollections and context.

About the Author

Harald Penrose (1904–1996) was an aeronautical engineer, chief test pilot at Westland Aircraft from 1931 to 1953, and later an aviation author. His flying experience ranged from early aircraft and gliders to jet fighters and helicopters. He designed and built his own glider, created numerous boats and yachts, and wrote extensively on British aviation history. His career brought him into contact with many of the leading figures in aviation, giving his writing a perspective grounded in direct experience.
